Globalization of a Red Bee

Fast-food restaurants are popular for their convenience in getting food while on the go. Food served in fast food restaurants typically caters to a meat-sweet diet, or the western pattern diet, and is offered from a limited menu; is cooked in bulk in advance and kept hot; is finished and packaged to order; and is usually available ready to take away, though seating may be provided.

Fast-food restaurants were first seen in the US where McDonald's Corporation was first introduced to the world. McDonalds became the largest known fast-food restaurant across the world with 31,000+ branches all over the world. But aside from McDonald's, there is another fast-food restaurant that's making its name across the Asian countries and some major countries around the world.

Jollibee Food Corporation is currently the biggest fast-food chain in the country; it also has locations in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Dubai and Brunei.

But all of that didn't start out serving our favorite 'yumburger' or its popular 'chickenjoy'. It all started as an ordinary ice cream parlor serving ordinary ice creams for their customers. This was what Jollibee started until Manuel C. Lumba came into the picture. It was he who instructed Tony Tan Caktiong of converting their business to selling hamburgers instead of ice creams; this is after his studies that there are so much potential that can be found in hamburgers.

Lumba next re-formed the name Jolibe to Jolly Bee and made the two words form a single name Jollibee, but changed the "y" to an "i". The Jollibee mascot was conceptualized by Lumba inspired by local and foreign children's books. Lumba next created the product name "Yumburger" as well as the name "Chickenjoy".

This was the start of what is now the biggest fast food chain not only in the Philippines, but all over the world, the Jollibee Food Corporation. The company acquired 80 percent of Greenwich Pizza. And in 2000, the company acquired Chowking, allowing Jollibee to be part of the oriental quick service restaurant segment. As of December 2007, Jollibee Food Corporation has become one of the biggest fast-food chains in the world with 1,655 stores worldwide and total sales of more than $1 billion.

Jollibee Food Corporation had also reported to have 1,464 stores in the Philippines in March of 2008 namely, Jollibee having 627 branches , Chowking having 377 branches, Greenwich Pizza having 236 branching, Red Ribbon Bakeshop having 194 branches, Délifrance having 28 brances and Tio Pepe having 2 branches. It also had 191 stores overseas.
